The South Puget Sound Community College men's soccer team played arguably its best half of the season, taking a one-goal lead into the intermission before falling to Northwest Athletic Conference West Region-leading Highline College, 4-1, at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey on Saturday, October 9.
Sophomore Dakota Seddon, a 2019 Tumwater High School graduate, put the Clippers up 1-0 after scoring on a free kick from 30 yards out. The lead would hold through the first half for South Puget Sound Community College before Highline posted four tallies in the second frame en route to the victory.
"(It was) a tale of two halves," said South Puget Sound coach Jeremy Richtmyre. "The first half we were the better team. We possessed as a team and worked for each other. In the second half, we made a few mistakes and had a few questionable calls go against us that just hurt us too much to recover. How the rest of the season goes will be dictated by which version of our team shows up for the rest of our games."
Clippers goalkeeper Christian Morell finished with seven saves, including a spectacular diving save moments after Seddon's goal, where the sophomore punched away the potential point, to keep the visiting Thunderbirds off the scoreboard in the first half.
Amri Mwenyeheri finished with a game-high four shots on goal for South Puget Sound Community College. The Clippers were called for nine fouls, while Highline, which held a slim 3-2 advantage in corners, was whistled for 13 fouls.
"The team's effort, on and off the ball, and their willingness to work for each other (impressed me)," Richtmyre said. "It is something that I've seen potential for all season, but this is the first time it really showed in a competition. I'm hopeful we can continue it going forward."
The two teams will meet again at the Starfire Campus in Tukwila on Wednesday, October 27. The Clippers return to action on Wednesday, October 13 when they travel to Tacoma College. The match is scheduled to start at 4:15 p.m.
