Clippers Rally Comes Up Short Against Highline College
Story by: Michael Wade
DES MONIES, WA- The South Puget Sound Men's Basketball program came into its contest with Highline College looking to end a four-game conference losing streak. After falling behind at the half by 22 points, the Clippers played more spirited basketball in the second half and cut the lead to seven points at the ten-minute media timeout.
The strong second-half run was keyed by the play of Sophomore Forward Mekhi Speller, who posted a team-high 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Justin Hicks tallied 14 points and six rebounds on the night, with much of his scoring coming in the first half.
The story of the night for the Clippers came down to poor shooting, with four starters combining to shoot 4-31 from the floor. On the other side of the court, the Thunderbirds were much more efficient in terms of shooting the basketball from both the field (50%) and from three (36.4%). Turnovers and poor shooting would ultimately be too much for SPSCC to overcome as they would fall to Highline 82-57.
The Clippers will head to Aberdeen, WA for their next matchup on Saturday against Grays Harbor Community College.
